The Apurva Kempinksi
Project Scope
Interior Design, Architecture (The Chapel)
Date
2019
Location
Nusa Dua, Bali
The Apurva Kempinski Bali has been made with an entrance section in a pendopo-style, blending Javanese architectural traditions with the historical significance of the Majapahit Empire — a nod to a powerful historical empire, adding a layer of regal sophistication. The copper-covered tiered ceiling, inspired by Mount Meru, is a masterstroke. It’s not just a ceiling; it’s a sculptural element that draws the eye upward, creating a sense of awe and spiritual connection. The copper itself will age beautifully, adding to the building’s legacy. To create an immediate sense of arrival, a captivating wonder sets the tone for the entire experience. The pendopo-style lobby, with its open, airy design, evokes the traditional Javanese gathering space, fostering a sense of community and welcome.
The lobby is the hotel’s heart and was made to tell a story. The tall gebyok, a traditional Javanese partition, is a focal point; a masterpiece of craftsmanship. It was created by over 600 artists from Java and Bali, highlighting our commitment to supporting local artisans and preserving traditional skills. The Labradorite granite flooring, adds a touch of luxury and creates a dynamic interplay of light, changing the ambiance of the space throughout the day and night. The combination of Javanese and Balinese artistic elements within the gebyok is a method of visually showing the unity of the Indonesian islands, showing even though the islands have different cultures, together they can produce a beautiful work of art combining elements from each culture harmoniously.
We drew inspirations from modern tropical Indonesian design for the public area furniture while ensuring a foundation of classic elements remained. To create a truly Indonesian atmosphere, The Apurva Kempinski Bali’s interior design draws upon a spectrum of traditional arts, seamlessly incorporating Balinese carvings, Jepara’s woodwork, Sumba’s woven fabrics, and the unique crafts
of Papua, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. Each piece is carefully curated to showcase the diversity and beauty of Indonesian craftsmanship, creating a rich and layered visual experience. The integration of traditional arts from across Indonesia was a key part of our design strategy aim to create a curated experience, a journey through the archipelago. Each piece was carefully selected to showcase the unique skills and traditions of different regions.
